Obituary
Vincent Michael Flannery, 98, passed away on Saturday, February 3, 2018 at Kansas City Hospice House in Kansas City, Missouri. A visitation is scheduled for 6:00 – 8:00 PM on Thursday, February 8, 2017 at Langsford Funeral Home in Lee’s Summit, Missouri. Rosary will follow at 8:00 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 AM on Friday, February 9, 2018 at St. Bernadette Parish in Kansas City, Missouri. Burial will follow at the Calvary Cemetery in Kansas City.
Vincent was born on November 21, 1919. He was the third child of Joseph M. and Hettie J. (Shumway) Flannery. He was married to Marguerite Landuyt in 1946. She preceded him in death in 1989. He was a proud member of the United States Army Air Corp from 1942-1945, attaining the rank of Sergeant. He was awarded 5 bronze stars serving in the South Philippine Islands, Luzon, and New Guinea.
He was a graduate of the Lathrope Technical School and worked in his father’s coal yard. He worked for Dierk’s Lumber Company for over 20 years, starting as a truck driver, rising to the manager of the Kansas City, Kansas yard, and eventually the main lumber yard at 19th and Woodland. In 1965, he started Flannery Delivery Service, hauling rock, asphalt, dirt, and sand, before retiring in 1985 to help take care of Marguerite. He also worked various part time and evening jobs with Yellow Cab, Merchants Delivery, and many years for the United States Post Office sorting mail.
Through his life, Vincent met many friends and helped many people, most of whom we fondly remember today. He liked to drive and enjoyed playing cards and frequently visited the local casinos with his sons. He loved giving quarters to children and shaking hands after mass. In retirement, he was a driver and active member of the Young Of Heart Club, the O’Hara Chapter of the Knights Of Columbus, and a parishioner at the St. Bernadette Parish.
Vincent was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marguerite; and siblings, Florence (Flannery) Adams, Laverne (Flannery) Hilden, Joe Flannery, Norma Jean (Flannery) Lewis, and Bernice (Flannery) Burton.
He is survived by his three sons, Joseph M. (Janet) Flannery, James V. (Mary) Flannery, and Roy T. Flannery; 9 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; sisters, Lucille (Flannery) Duncan and Bernadette (Flannery) Reiser; and many nieces and nephews.

It was an honor working with Vince. Starting with hauling rock when I was 18 and later at the asphalt plant. Vince was a generous and caring guy always helping others. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Wednesday, I moved the couch in the great room and there was an Andrew Johnson $1.00 coin under it. I’m not aware of this coin being in the house previously. I never heard of an Andrew Johnson coin. You seldom see dollar coins in circulation period, then one presented itself in our home this week… Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for sharing, Dad. I remember Uncle Vincent always having dollar coins in his hands as a surprise to give out. He reminded me of Papa Joe with his flare and charm.

Uncle Vincent is Grandpa Joe’s older brother. He’s 98 now. He and cousin Jim have visited St. Louis several times over the years, at least once to visit Diddy after Grandpa Joe passed away. They came to Grandpa Joe’s funeral. Every time I talked to Uncle Vincent (unfortunately, not often), he always asked about how your grandmother was doing.
I always found Uncle Vincent to be in good humor. He always enjoyed kids and had a pocket full of quarters to hand out. Your mother and I took him out to breakfast when we were in Kansas City a number of years back. We found out that he, Jim and others in the family had a poker night every week. I know he was a devoted husband, the primary care giver to his wife that suffered from dementia for many years before she passed away. He is a family man of faith, that has been a core of the Kansas City Flannery Clan for many generations.
