Obituary

Bernita (Bert) Schmidt, 98, of Lee’s Summit was called to her eternal home March 8, 2026. There she joins the love of her life, Loren and her two children, Donna and Scott, as well as numerous relatives and friends. Bert was born March 25, 1927 and was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Sylvan Grove, Kansas. There she also attended Lutheran school. Bert and Loren were married October 10, 1945 and enjoyed 56 years of marriage until Loren’s passing in 2001. Bert was a loving and devoted wife and mother, always putting her husband and children first.

As a devoted stay-at-home mom, she raised her children with unwavering love, strength and guidance, teaching them kindness, resilience, and the importance of family. Once her children were raised she began a career in the Federal Government, retiring after twelve years of service. Bert was a charter member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Lee’s Summit, helping to establish St. Matthew in 1959. She was very active in the Lutheran Women’ s Missionary League (LWML), taught Sunday School, attended Bible Studies, helped with Bible School, served on Altar Guild, the Funeral Committee, took care of the Food Pantry for Lee’s Summit Social Services, and served on numerous other committees until declining health made it impossible to continue. She also helped start the Classics Group for seniors. Preceding Bert in death were her husband, daughter, son, her parents, seven brothers and sisters, her great niece, and a nephew. She is survived by her daughters, Jeanne and Kathy Schmidt both of Lee’s Summit, a son-in-law Ray Wooten of Olathe, Kansas, and daughter-in-law Leah Schmidt of Lee’s Summit, eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Memorials will be to the Altar Guild at St. Matthew Lutheran Church.

Graveside services will be held on June 20, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. at Lee’s Summit Historical Cemetery in Lee’s Summit, Missouri. We would like to thank John Knox Hospice for their compassionate and professional care, especially Chris, Mary Jane, and Erika, who saw Mom as more than just another name off the list of many patients, not as someone who was dying, but as a living human spirit and friend. She was someone who mattered to this caring team of professionals.

Mom, you were so dearly loved and will be so greatly missed. Thank you for all your wisdom, grace, prayers and unfailing love. You made our world so much better simply by being you. We were so blessed and honored to be your children. Until we meet again…

Jeannie and Kathy,
What a lovely person your mother was to be around. I know you girls feel so blessed to have had her for a mom. She was certainly blessed to have both of you. Art and I will certainly be praying for that special comfort that only the Lord can give. Oh, the sweet memories I know you both must have.

Thinking of you,

Dear Jeanne and Kathy
What a long and special life your mother lived. She was such a lovely person. It was a treat to see her at church, in town, or when Pinochle card party was at our house. She was always willing to take the time for a smile and a nice conversation, even when I was a little girl. Thank you very much for sharing her with the rest of us.
