Obituary
Daniel Alvin “Dan” Cummins of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, passed away on May 12, 2025, following a courageous battle with cancer. He was 71.
Dan was born on February 23, 1954, in Little Rock, Arkansas, to Alvin Earl and Louise Marie Cummins. He spent his formative years in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, alongside his younger brother, Joe. His early childhood included a brief time living in France, where French was his first language—a cultural experience that sparked his lifelong love for travel and adventure.
Dan attended Will Rogers Elementary and graduated from Sooner High School in 1972, where he played football and wrestled. He went on to attend Oklahoma State University, where he joined the Sigma Nu fraternity and earned his degree in 1978. To help fund his education, he served as the first manager of the iconic Eskimo Joe’s restaurant. He majored in psychology and marketing, laying the foundation for a successful career in sales.
An avid hunter and fisherman, Dan found joy and peace spending time in nature —whether in the mountains, in the woods, in the fields or on the water.
For over four decades, Dan worked in commercial refrigeration sales across the United States with Hussmann Corporation. Known as a consummate communicator and professional, he built lasting relationships with clients and colleagues alike. His career also nurtured his love for golf, which he enjoyed with customers and friends across the country.
Dan had an extraordinary zest for life and an adventurous spirit. He was an eclectic music enthusiast, a skilled and passionate cook—ranging from barbecue to gourmet cuisine—and a connoisseur of fine wine and whiskey. His love for the outdoors was further evident in his enjoyment of boating, canoeing, and rafting, and he also had a fondness for British and Australian television series.
He was a man of great empathy, warmth, and humor. Dan touched countless lives through his kindness, mentorship, and generosity. He left an indelible mark on many lives, including that of an international exchange student to whom he became a father figure—offering warmth, kindness, and guidance during a time she needed it most. He was always present with a listening ear and made everyone around him feel valued. His voice, often described as “silky smooth, like molasses in the summertime,” was as distinctive as his gentle and giving spirit.
Dan is preceded in death by his parents, Alvin Earl and Louise Marie Cummins, and his brother, Benny Joe Cummins. He is survived by his loving devoted wife, Julie, and his brother Joe and family.
Dan’s legacy of compassion, laughter, and friendship lives on in all who had the privilege of knowing him. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in Dan’s name to Wayside Waifs.
I did some painting for Dan and his lovely Wife. He was a great guy. Wish I got to know him longer. But he had such a positive impact in the little time I knew Dan. I will miss you buddy.
Dan was a true friend, and I highly valued our relationship. I will remember him every time that i have a scotch. I will remember the dinners, drinks and laughter the rest of my life. Rest in peace my brother.
Only knowing Dan for a short period of his life, I felt like I knew a lifelong friend. Dan was everything a person looks for in a friend. He was everything that was described in his obituary, especially a generous individual with his time and possessions alike. We will miss him dearly, as he was a true gem of a friend.
