Obituary

David Lyle Krough, age 70, passed away peacefully August 24, 2026 at home surrounded by his family. Funeral services will be August 28, 2026 at Langsford Funeral Home in downtown Lee’s Summit. Visitation will be held from 1:00-2:30 with a memorial service starting at 2:30.

David was born on August 15, 1956, in Adrian, Missouri, to Sara Rosier and John Krough. He grew up on the family farm with his grandmother, but during his high school years, he traveled to Butler to stay with his Uncle Gary and Aunt Vicki so he could pursue his love of football and play for the high school team.

David began college at Southwest Missouri State University, where he was a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity, part of the football team, and, most importantly, met his future wife, Susan. Their marriage got off to a difficult and unexpected start. Just before their wedding, David was diagnosed with cancer for the first time. He was given permission to leave the hospital for the weekend so he could marry Susan, but immediately afterward, he returned to the hospital to begin an intensive course of chemotherapy.

That diagnosis was the first of many battles David would face. Over the years, there were numerous hospital stays, and more than once, doctors told him they did not expect him to survive. But David never let those predictions define him. He faced every diagnosis head-on with an unwaveringly positive attitude, determination, and zest for life. What began as a devastating diagnosis ultimately became 50 years of what David called “borrowed time” – 50 years filled with family, friendship, work, laughter, and countless memories.

David transferred to the University of Missouri to finish college. It was there that his love for Columbia and Mizzou truly began – a love that would remain with him for the rest of his life.

David and Susan welcomed three children: twin daughters, born in 1985, and a son, born in 1989. Although their marriage eventually ended, their love for their children remained a lifelong bond. They continued to share a deep friendship and remained close until the end of Susan’s life.

David spent most of his professional career as an insurance agent, including the final 14 years of his career with State Farm Insurance. He was a true salesman at heart, with a natural ability to connect with people, a strong entrepreneurial spirit, and an enthusiasm that was uniquely David.

David was a country boy at heart. He loved the outdoors, especially fishing and hunting, and he never shied away from hard work. There was truly no project too big or too challenging for David, if something needed to be done, he was the man who would figure it out and get it done.

He loved being involved in his children’s lives and coached them in both football and basketball. He was a devoted fan of the Kansas City Chiefs, but his greatest sports love was always the University of Missouri Tigers. Whether he was cheering from the stands, watching from home, or talking about the Tigers with friends and family, his Mizzou pride ran deep.

Through every chapter of his life, David embraced the time he was given. He lived with courage, optimism, and an appreciation for the people and experiences that mattered most. His was truly a life of borrowed time, but he made every borrowed moment count.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Sara Rosier, his father, John Krough, his brother Darryl Krough, his beloved grandmother Mildred Rosier, his grandfather David Krough, and his former wife Susan Griffin.

He is survived by his daughters, Blair Vodicka and her spouse, Kenny Vodicka, and Brynna Krough-Deaton and her spouse, Dex Deaton; his son, John Krough and his wife, Sasha Krough; his sister, Kim Porter; his brother, Lester Harsh; and seven grandchildren, Ty and Cam Vodicka, and Mazie, Kenna, Chandler, Connor, and Callan Krough. He will be lovingly remembered by his family and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Sending love to all of the family. I’ve known and worked with David for more than 15 years and I’ve always admired that no matter how many times he was knocked down, he always got back up and approached life with a positive attitude through all of his adversity. He will be missed, so sorry for your loss. Praying for God’s peace for the family.

I am so very sorry to hear of your loss. You all are in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. David was always so kind and genuine. Whenever we crossed paths, he always took the time to stop and chat, and I will always remember his positive, warm, welcoming spirit. My deepest condolences to the family.

I wish I knew David better. We spoke a few times professionally as agents. The few times we talked personally were memorable as I have had cancer twice – but never went through what David courageously and positively fought through most of his life. His cancer stories made me feel blessed that mine were simple and relatively painless (Melanoma and colon). He was and remains a true inspiration. Never give up. Prayers and best wishes to the family.

David’s little sister Kim and I have been best friends since we were in 11th grade and David was 25 years old and he was the head of the family after the loss of their mother David stepped up in big ways. I know us girls were not the easiest on him but I think we prepared him for the future. He was still just a kid himself.
Reading this beautiful tribute to him it captures him perfectly. He is very much loved and will be very much missed. I know that David and Susan will be very important Angel’s for all of you. Continued blessing 😇
