Ms. Dawn M. Sanders, age 70, passed away peacefully on February 5, 2024. She was born on April 20, 1954, in Poplar Bluff, Missouri, to Francis and Mary Sanders. Dawn was a dedicated, compassionate, and intelligent woman who touched the lives of all who knew her.
Dawn graduated from Lee’s Summit High School in 1972 and went on to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology at the University of Central Missouri (UCM) in Warrensburg. After earning her degree, she proudly embraced her Irish heritage and traveled to Ireland and England, fulfilling one of her lifelong dreams.
Upon her return, Dawn embarked on a long and fulfilling career as a social worker for the State of Missouri’s Division of Family Services in Independence, Missouri. For 30 years, she demonstrated an unparalleled commitment to her work, helping those in need with care, precision, and a passion for service. Dawn was well-respected for her professional skills and her kind, empathetic approach to helping others.
Outside of her professional life, Dawn was known for her love of collecting. She had an extensive collection of Steiff Bears, Royal Doulton figurines, and Disney figurines. A devoted fan of the Kansas City Chiefs, she was often found watching their games while enjoying a cup of her favorite English tea. Dawn’s interests were diverse, and she had a particular fondness for English literature, particularly works on the Titanic, science fiction, and juvenile literature. She also enjoyed reading the Catholic Bible daily and researching the Titanic, an event that captivated her for much of her life.
Dawn was an active member of St. Mark’s Catholic Church in Independence, Missouri, where she donated generously to St. Vincent de Paul. She remained a faithful attendee of Mass until she was no longer able, continuing to watch services on television each Sunday.
In 2022, after selling her home, Dawn moved to Novel Place in Blue Springs, Missouri, where she continued to advocate for others. She never married but led a full and rich life, surrounded by loving friends and family.
Dawn was preceded in death by her parents, Francis and Mary Sanders; her Grandmother Moon; her Grandmother Sanders; and her Aunt Loretta Sanders. She is survived by many friends, extended family, and those whose lives she touched through her work and kindness.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to St. Vincent de Paul in Dawn’s memory.
May she rest in peace.
