Obituary

Our Dear Sister and Aunt, Dorothy Stayton (age 94), was surrounded with family and lots of love when she went home to our Heavenly Father October 18, 2018. She was born April 9, 1924 in Lee’s Summit to John Arthur Stayton and Anna Marie Dorothy Stayton (Effertz) who preceded her in death in 1980 and 1974 respectively. She was one of seven children. Her brothers William Thomas Arthur (Buddy) died in 1951, Harry Howard died in 2018 (less than 2 weeks before) and sisters Mary Margaret died in 1942, Eleanor (Rich) died in 1970 and Martha (Fretty) died in 2015. She is survived by 1 sister – Alice Rosalie (Link) who lives in Colorado Springs, CO. She also had one niece who preceded her in death – LuAnn Glatz (Link) who died in 2016. She is survived by 6 nephews, 5 nieces, 15 great nephews and nieces, and 10 great, great nephews and nieces.

She attended and graduated from both Colburn grade school and Lee’s Summit High School. Dorothy (Aunt Bob) worked for Southwestern Bell as an operator for 41 years, first in Lee’s Summit, then in Independence and later in Kansas City before she retired in 1988. She helped care for her Father and Mother up to the time when they passed away. She lived and worked on the family farm her entire life – she was the ultimate farm girl – she loved everything there was to love about being on a working farm. She took part in all aspects of making a family farm operate, from raising chickens to milking livestock, to selling eggs and harvesting crops. She also possessed a keen interest in the history of Lee’s Summit and had attended past historical society functions. Aunt Bob was a constant caregiver her entire life and enjoyed every minute being with her family. She was a devoted daughter, sister, and aunt with 3 generations of family that meant the most to her besides her love for God and the Catholic Church. There were so many times we remember seeing Aunt Bob with a rosary in her hand.

Her family loved to hear her tell stories of the family ancestry and she loved investigating Stayton and Effertz family histories. If anyone had a question about a family member, she was the one that always knew the answer. We will always remember her beautiful smile and the love she had in her eyes for all of us. We feel so blessed to have had Aunt Bob in our lives as long as we did but will truly miss her!! We learned so many things from her – patience, kindness, Christian love and we are better people because of her.

She was a long-time parishioner and very active participation in Our Lady of Presentation in Lee’s Summit and a member of the Ladies Guild, as well as the original Saint Mary’s Parish and had many dear, close friends over the years.
