Obituary

It is with great sorrow that the family of Elizabeth (Betty) Ann (Steele) Guthrie, age 84, passed away on May 10, 2024.  She will be missed by many.

Betty was born in Fortescue Missouri on February 6, 1940, to parents John (Cappy) and Virginia Steele.  She was the third of five sisters.  Betty met her high school sweetheart and love of her life Frederick F Guthrie while in school.  During her school years she was active in cheerleading, basketball, and many academic clubs.  She graduated from Craig Missouri.  After high school Betty and Fred were united in marriage at Maitland Missouri on January 22, 1959.  They had a lifetime of adventure and a love story that should be written about in books. Fred enlisted in the United State Air Force and away they went.  Together they traveled due to the military.   Stationed in several states but their journey led them to Whiteman AFB where Betty worked as manager of the BX and Shoppette for many years.  Later in life she worked for State Farm St Joseph Missouri.  But her most treasured-most fulfilling job was when she was caring for her three children, they gave her so much pleasure.  And in time her grandchildren gave her great joy in life!

Preceding her in death were her parents, her sister Grace Moser, her daughter Kerri Bess Guthrie, and her son Frederick F Guthrie JR.

Survivors include her loving husband of 65 years Frederick F Guthrie Sr of the home in Greenwood Missouri, Daughter Wendy Sue (James) Viers of Greenwood, Missouri, Daughter in law Teresa Guthrie of Weston Missouri.  Sisters Jean Yadon, Marolyn Lautaret and Helen Roberts.   Grandchildren:  James (Cassandra) Viers, Christine Elizabeth (Jeffrey) Mahurin, Amber (Zach) Webster, Dylan (Kelsey) Guthrie, Cody Guthrie. Ten Great Grandchildren, and two Great Great Grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews that loved her.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the family home on Sunday, June 2 from 2pm to 4pm, all are invited to celebrate.

We would like to give great appreciation to the Kansas City Hospice & Palliative Care, Lisa, Kizzy, Stacy and Kathy for the love, time and care you gave to our sweet wife/momma/grandma.  We will be forever grateful.

Condolences to Fred and the Guthrie family. The friendship of Betty and Fred during my final year at Whiteman remains unequaled in my life. May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you now and forever more.

So sorry for the loss of your Wife, Mother and Grandmother. Please know that I am thinking of you and send all my love, prayers to you all! We all have lots of good memories of Betty and hope that your good memories will help you through this difficult time.

RIP Betty… you will be missed… hugs and prayers for your family.

So sorry Uncle Fred, Wendy and family. There was only Aunt Betty, she idolized her family. My most sincere condolences.

I didn’t know Betty well but know about the love her family had for her and the way Wendy and Jim helped take care of her. I am sorry for the hurt and loss you all feel. My prayers continue to be with all of you.

Miss Betty was so kind and loving, always sending the most supportive messages over many years. I didn’t find out until 2012 that she had known so much of the troubles my family endured while living at Whiteman, and her messages of encouragement, love and support are ones I will always cherish. My condolences to Wndy, and the family. I will respect and honor her, always.
Love,
Penny
