Obituary
Evelyn Maria Galate passed away peacefully while under hospice care near Houston, Texas on Thursday, May 25, 2023 at age 100. She had spent her last six and a half years in home hospice care with her son’s family in Missouri City, Texas.
Evelyn was born on August 7, 1922, in Columbus Nebraska where she grew up the second eldest of 4 sisters. High on the list of her youthful joys were visits with many cousins on nearby rural farms. While training to be a wartime nurse in Kearney, Nebraska she married the love of her life, Nathan Pat Galate with whom she celebrated 72 years of marriage before his passing in 2017.
Upon Nathan’s return from WWII they raised 2 sons, Joseph W. Galate and Michael P. Galate, in suburban Kansas City. Ever the fastidious and dutiful homemaker, Evelyn loved tending to large vegetable gardens, canning, and baking. Her special annual joy though was a summer trek to visit family in Nebraska, which instilled a strong “family first” mindset on her sons.
Her ongoing hobby and passion was making beautiful hand-crafted ceramic decorations. In retirement years Evelyn volunteered time to create sellable craft items with her husband and new found friends in support of many fundraisers for the Little Sisters of the Poor.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 72 years, Nathan Galate; parents William and Anna Schroeder; sisters Vernetta Bailey-Heckman, Dolores Gossett, and Beverly Kuklish; and sister-in-law Santa Mary Galate.
She is survived by sons Joseph Galate (Debbie) and Michael Galate (Ginni), granddaughters Trina (Brian) Lassiter, Christy (Mike) Grimes; grandsons Jonathan (Mallory) Galate, Sean Galate, and Ryan Galate; great-granddaughters Aspen Phillips, Taryn Phillips, Erica Grimes, Sophia Grimes, Cecilia Grimes and Gianna Galate; and great-grandsons Logan Phillips, Kaiden Grimes, Cruz Galate and Carson Galate.
Funeral Mass will be at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, June 7, 2023 with a visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. at St. Margaret of Scotland Catholic Church, 777 NE Blackwell Road, Lee’s Summit, MO 64086. Burial will follow service at Mount Olivet Cemetery, 7601 Blue Ridge, Kansas City, MO 64138.

My deepest sympathy goes out to the family. I know she was a loving wife and mother. She lived a long life and was able to see her grandchild, great grand children. What a special blessing. May she rest in peace.
