Obituary
George Richard “Dick” MacKay, age 88, of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, passed away peacefully on January 8, 2026.
Dick was born on August 25, 1937, in Independence, Missouri, to George and Dorothy MacKay. He was raised in Independence, where he was active in the Boy Scouts, before moving to Oak Grove, Missouri, to attend middle and high school. There, he ran track, played football and met his high school sweetheart, Myrna Sue, whom he married and shared 65 wonderful years of marriage.
Dick attended Central College, earning a Bachelor of Arts, and later completed pharmacy school at UMKC. Following the death of his father in the early 1960s, Dick took over the family pharmacy, which he owned and operated for 42 years. A true small-town pharmacist, Dick cared deeply for his customers and community, often helping those in need by quietly giving medicine to those who could not afford it. His compassion and integrity defined his career and his life.
He was a longtime member of the Kansas City Pharmacy Association, the National Association of Retail Druggists (NARD), and the Masonic Lodge. Both Dick and Myrna were dedicated members of Woods Chapel United Methodist Church.
Dick was first and foremost a family man. He and Sue were devoted parents and grandparents who believed in giving their children a love for the outdoors and time together. They took countless family trips camping, canoeing, hiking, and snow skiing—especially to Colorado. In 1980, they built a cherished family cabin at Truman Lake, where years were spent boating, fishing, and making memories with children, grandchildren and many friends. Dick especially loved being on the water and crappie fishing alongside Sue.
Dick and Sue were also lifelong Kansas City Chiefs fans. They attended Super Bowl IV and proudly held season tickets for more than 50 years, sharing tailgates and games with family and friends. Later in life, they enjoyed golf, traveling with friends, cruises, and warm-weather golf trips. Dick especially treasured his trips to Alaska, a place that captured his imagination long after, as he loved watching Alaska-themed programs at home.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents, George and Dorothy MacKay, and his beloved grandson, Nathan Giron.
He is survived by his loving wife, Myrna Sue MacKay; his son, Mark Stephen MacKay; his daughter, Melissa Lynn MacKay; his grandsons, Sean Andrew MacKay (Andrea) and Zachary Stephen MacKay (Alaina); and his great-grandchildren, Emma MacKay, Chase MacKay, Bentlee Swartz, Norah MacKay.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, January 15, 2026, at Langsford Funeral Home in Lee’s Summit, Missouri, beginning at 10:00 a.m., followed by a funeral service at 11:30 a.m. A brief graveside service will follow at Lee’s Summit Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in honor of Dick’s grandson, Nathan, to Nathan’s Catch through the Missouri Conservation Heritage Foundation athttps://mochf.org/help-families-fish-with-nathans-catch/
Dick will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, love of family, and quiet way of helping others. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched, the family he cherished, and the countless memories made along the way.

I was sad to see Dick’s passing. We had such a picture perfect neighborhood and I cherish the times we had there on Delaware street. Dick was such a positive man with the best laugh around. He loved his family , especially Sue and he taught me a lot about life just being his neighbor. I loved his humor and I will remember him forever.
