Obituary

Helen Louise (Adams) Oman, age 92 passed away December 16, 2024, at Lees Summit Medical Center after a brief illness surrounded by her loving family.

Helen was born December 5, 1932, at the family farm in Lone Jack, Missouri. She was the youngest of two children born during the Great Depression. At an early age she developed an inquisitive nature and love of learning. This served her well as she graduated Valedictorian in her class at Lone Jack High School.  She also went to Longview Community College and earned her Associates Degree when her children were grown. Helen retired from Unity Village Customer Service department after many years.

Helen met the love of her life, Lester, through an introduction from her brother, David. They would go on to be married for 72 years. Helen and Lester had three children: Jim, Steve and Susan.  The couple raised their children in South Kansas City where they were involved in the Mariner Group and were Teaching Elders at Ruskin Heights Presbyterian Church for decades. Later they became members of the First Presbyterian Church in Lees Summit.  Helen enjoyed exercising her mind through crossword puzzles and reading; she was also a part of a quilting group at her church.

Helen was preceded in death by her spouse Lester, her parents Noah and Bertha Adams and her brother David Adams.  She is survived by her three children, Jim Oman, Steve Oman, Susan Nichols (Tim). Three grandchildren, Anna Oman, Josh Nichols (Stephanie), Erin Nichols and two great-grandchildren, Colton and Jackson Nichols.

Her celebration of life will be January 7, 2025, at First Presbyterian Church, 1625 NW O’Brien Rd, Lee’s Summit, MO 64081.  Visitation will be at 10:30 am at the church and a memorial service will follow at 11:00 am.  In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts are suggested for First Presbyterian Church of Lees Summit.

Arrangements by Langsford Funeral Home, 115 SW 3rd Street, Lees Summit, MO 64063.

Susan, Steve & Jim,

I was so sorry to hear about your mom from Susan. It was such a pleasure knowing your mom for years. It was great living next door to you all for years. I’m glad that I’ve been able to stay in touch with Susan for all these years. Her friendship is very important to me. Now, your mom is with your dad, other family and friends. You all are in my thoughts and prayers.

Susan Curtis (Purnell)

Dear family: Susan & I extend our condolences to you and your family at Helen’s passing. I was your parents’ pastor at Ruskin Heights Presbyterian Church (1997-2004) and we lived in the same neighborhood – Stratford Estates. Helen and Les were faithful Christians and wonderful people. May the Lord grant you peace and consolation. ~Rob Cromwell
