Obituary

Herbert G. Kermick, a Vietnam War Veteran, 89 years old, died quietly in his home in John Knox Village, Lee’s Summit, Missouri, on July 18, 2023. “Herb” was born November 25, 1933, in Passaic, New Jersey to George and Cometia (Meyer) Kermick, who proceeded him in death.

After joining the Air Force on February 1, 1952, Herb was completing new recruit training when he married Charlotte (VanBrussel), who survives him. The couple were married 69 years and spent over 20 years as an Air Force couple and raised two sons: Herbert G. Kermick, Jr. (Jeanette) of Spur, TX and Douglas Wayne Kermick (Debbie) of Knob Noster, MO.

Herb’s military service took the family to assignments at Hunter AFB, GA; Naha AFB, Okinawa; Sewart AFB, TN; Lajes Field, Azores and Langley AFB, VA. The family retired on August 1, 1972, and made their home in Murfreesboro, TN.

During his retirement, Herb and Charlotte were bitten by the military relocation bug before settling again in Ocean Springs, MS., while Herb finished his employment years working for the Department of Veterans Affairs. Following the devastation of the Mississippi Gulf Coast by Hurricane Katrina, Herb and Charlotte toured, cruised, served as campground Hosts and finally settled in D’Iberville, MS. Favorite memories among their Golden Years included a motorcycle trip with friends from the Gold Wing Road Riders Association Miss. Chapter “B” to Nova Scotia and Northeastern United States.

Herb “Pop Pop” was grandfather to four grandchildren: Herbert G. Kermick III (Lisa) from Murfreesboro, TN, Katherine Newcombe (Neil) from Prattville, AL, Michael Kermick (Amber) from Dickens, TX, and Bethany Welch (Gary Jr.) from Knob Noster, MO. He had 10 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren.

Herb was a Mason, Scottish Rite, Shriner, and past Patron of the Order of Eastern Star.
