Obituary

James “Jim” Horan Yost May 2, 1948 – February 15, 2025

James “Jim” Horan Yost, a lifelong resident of Lee’s Summit, MO, passed away peacefully at his home on February 15, 2025. Born on May 2, 1948, in Kansas City, MO, Jim was known for his sharp wit, boundless humor, and kind heart. He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Naomi Yost, and his grandson, Jaycee Coffman. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Barbara Yost, with whom he shared a wonderful marriage since December 19, 1992. He is also survived by his loving daughters, Marsha Yost-Rice (Paul Rice), Barbara Kay Cain (Roger Cain), and Madison Hatfield (Blake Hatfield); his stepson, Jason Sparks (Amber Sparks), along with their children, Eli and Jameson; Brother in law Paul Bonnichsen and his sister, Susie Wood (George Wood); nieces, Jaime Medley (Troy Medley), with their daughters, Grace, Paige, and Claire, and Megan Jewell; granddaughter, Jenessa Coffman; and great-grandchildren, Thaddeus, Irys, and Sasha Coffman.

Jim had a remarkable gift for humor, always ready with the perfect joke for any situation. His laughter and quick wit made him a joy to be around. He delighted in telling and hearing stories about his grandchildren, nieces, and nephews, whom he loved to tease at every opportunity. His generous spirit extended even to neighborhood pets, often carrying treats for any stray dogs or cats that crossed his path. He was always prepared to help anyone if he could. He will be greatly missed.

A visitation will be held on Friday, February 21, 2025, from 1:00 to 2:30 PM, with services immediately following at 2:30 PM at Langsford Funeral Home in Lee’s Summit, MO.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Monarch Hospice for their exceptional care and compassion during this time.

Jim’s humor, kindness, and love for his family will forever be cherished by those who knew him.

I’m remembering what a kick he got from “The talking/singing fish”we got him for his birthday. Then the Ladies of the Lake and escorts had a gracious dinner at a plantation restaurant. A good night and a fond memory.!

I’m so sorry for your loss. I remember him as such a kind soul. Thinking of you all.

I’m still trying to wrap my head around not seeing Jim again. I loved his dry humor and how he always had a line to come back with, no matter what was said. He was always so good about dropping you off, Barb, for our “Ladies of the Lake” adventures and wishing us a great time. I’m so happy for the years you shared, Batb, and I know you will miss him so much.

I’m so sorry to read about the passing of Jimmy. That is what he was known as to me in high school. I graduated with Susie and him in 1966. I remember him as such a good guy with a smile on his face all the time. My heartfelt condolences to his family especially to his sister Susie.

Marsha and family,
Was sorry to hear about the passing of your dad. It is hard to go through no matter how old we are when our parents leave. You take care of yourself and your family and I know you do that very well! Prayers for all of your family. God Bless.

Love,
Pat

Barb and Madison

Jim is my Beta Tau Kappa Sigma fraternity brother circa 1967 at Baker University Baldwin City, Kansas!
We became lifelong friends and exchanged phone calls frequently…

It was so good to talk with him and keep up with his life’s events, which is always so proud of his family…

I knew his parents well and his sister and his beautiful wife…

Always look forward to visiting him in Lee Summit on my return visit to the Kansas City area as I now live in the north Texas area… But separation of distance did not separate our friendship…

May God be with his family…

He will be miss greatly, and the news was absolutely sad beyond belief…

I went to high school with Jim. But really got to know him through his daughter Marsha. He was always super nice and fun to be around. I know he will be missed by everyone that knew him.

I’ve just heard of his crossing over. Always loved Uncle Jimmy!! Prayers for strength to my sweet cousin, Marsha. ♡♡♡
