Obituary
John David Pittard, born November 24th, 1955, in Parkville, Missouri, passed away on July 16th, 2024, in Grandview, Missouri, after bravely battling cancer. He was the beloved son of Madeline Brown and Donald Pittard, cherished brother of Kelly Pittard, uncle of Olivia Pittard and Andrew Mize, and stepbrother of Valerie Youngs.
John led a rich and varied life, marked by diverse experiences and passions. He graduated from the Kent School for Boys in Connecticut in 1974 and went on to earn a full scholarship to Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, California. His spiritual journey led him to join the NSA Nichiren Shoshu Buddhist organization for two years, exploring his beliefs deeply.
In October 1977, John enlisted in the United States Navy, serving his country until May 1979 with honor and dedication. John served on a Destroyer Class Navy Vessel in the 7th Fleet as a Fire Controlman responsible for maintaining the ship’s weaponry systems. Afterward, he returned to Connecticut and pursued various roles, including work as a circuit board driller, demonstrating his technical skills.
Over the years, he engaged in various occupations, reflecting his intelligence, versatility, and resilience. He worked in Medical Health Mobiles as a technician in New York and later as a bookkeeper in Princeton, New Jersey. His career path included roles in the satellite dish industry and sales, where he thrived as a magazine and paperback salesman for four years. He found meaningful work delivering items to railroad crews on trains, showcasing his commitment and determination to service.
John’s journey with mental illness was undoubtedly challenging, yet his kindness endured despite the heavy burden he carried. The support provided by the Veteran’s Administration played a crucial role in his life, offering him the assistance he needed during his trials and tribulations.
In 1981, John Pittard made a significant move to Olathe, Kansas, accompanying his mother Madeline Brown, until Madeline’s passing in 1993. Following this loss, John briefly embraced rural life near Salina, Kansas, immersing himself in his love of nature and animals.
The year 2005 brought another significant change with the passing of his father, Donald Pittard. Subsequently, John relocated to live with his sister and niece, finding solace and support within his family circle. Eventually, he transitioned to the Village at Carroll Park, where he resided until his battle with cancer concluded in 2024.
