Obituary
It is with heavy hearts the family of Joe Casillo announces the passing of this good Godly man on August 10, 2025, at his home. Joe was born on October 28, 1953, in Rome, NY. The third child of Joby and Betty Casillo. On July 31, 1976, he married the love of his life, Marlene Barclay, and they spent the next 49 years together. They had two daughters, Hannah and Chelsea. After several years of living in New England, the family made an exciting adventure to the Midwest and landed in the Kansas City area. Joe worked as a Medical Technologist at several area facilities until finally ending up at Saint Luke’s South Hospital, where he would retire in December of 2021.
Joe had a lot of passions in his lifetime. He loved music and playing his drums. In his world everything was a drum. Fireworks were another one of his passions. The man loved to blow things up. And he never missed a Kansas City Chiefs game.
But his greatest love was his family, which included his many animals. He enjoyed being outside working in the garden, hiking in the woods or kayaking. At 70 years old he went by himself and hiked 240 miles on the most difficult parts of the Appalachian Trail. They gave him the trail name of SLB which stood for ‘Stubborn Little Bastard”. He amazed many with his perseverance.
Joe leaves behind his wife and best friend, Marlene. He also leaves two daughters, Hannah Callahan and Chelsea Casillo, his two grandchildren, that were the pride and joy of his life, Adora and Cade Casillo, his three sisters Sandy Voveris, Jo-Ann Zall and Lisa O’Reilly, plus a large extended family. And the several fur babies that brought him so much pleasure.
In lieu of flowers, if you are not a Christian, find someone who is and ask them to tell you about Jesus Christ. If you are a Christian, find someone who is not and share your faith.
There will be a celebration of life held at Langsford Funeral Home, 115 SW 3rd St, Lee’s Summit MO on August 28, 2025, between 5 and 7 pm.

I worked with Joe at the St. Luke’s South Lab for many years! He is one of my favorite co-workers ever!!! He was a joy to work with and a joy to have has a friend. He was the sweetest man ever and I will never forget his hugs or how he called me “his little buddy”. The world just lost a beautiful light, but heaven just gained a precious soul! So sorry for your loss! Praying for you at this difficult time.

Marlene, we are sorry to hear about Joe’s passing. We always enjoyed talking with him at the Christmas parties and recognized that he was such a friendly and loving person. Sorry for your loss
I worked with Joe, we called him Hoppy back in the days of our youth, roofing we had many adventures from roofing the Hollis N.H. steeple 165′ to our “base staging” to shovel snow off roofs during the blizzard of ’78. He was a good man, and will be missed by all who knew him.
Joe was so much fun to work with at St. Luke’s South in the Lab. He taught me a lot about the medical field and taught me a lot about life. I also loved following his Appalachian adventures on Facebook when he retired. He will be missing by many. Prayers for all of his family for comfort, strength and peace.
Marlene my dear sister in Christ! I am so sad to hear about Joe’s passing and although I never had the pleasure of meeting him I know for a fact that if he was by your side for 49 years he must have been a truly wonderful soul. He is with our Lord & Savior now and someday you two will be together again. God Bless and keep you my friend.

Marlene and Family. Joe was Joe. A unique individual with a light mood, fun heart and always a smile. We got to enjoy Joe working with you over the years a couple times annually and we will never forget his driving skills as he piloted our van to the company Christmas party. I’m not sure if our hearts hurt more from laughter or being scared as we wound our way through the roads to the fun. Joe will be missed.
