Kevin Dean Grey

Obituary

Kevin Dean Grey passed away peacefully on October 19, 2025, after a courageous battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. He was born on August 1, 1958, in Coffeyville, Kansas, to Edward and Mary Grey.

Kevin graduated from Lee’s Summit High School and continued his education at the University of Central Missouri, where he earned a B.S. and an M.S. in Industrial Safety and Fire Management. His professional life included roles in Industrial Loss Prevention, Underwriting, and Reinsurance. However, one of his most cherished jobs was serving the Lee’s Summit School District as a dedicated school bus driver. He was a faithful member of the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection (COR) in Leawood.

Kevin married Barbara Winans in 1981, and together they lived in various states before retiring in Lee’s Summit, Missouri.

A man who embraced an active life, Kevin was an avid car enthusiast who enjoyed working on vehicles, running, biking, golfing, and playing basketball. Above all, he treasured taking trips, camping, and spending time with his family and grandsons.

Kevin was preceded in death by his father, Edward Grey, who also succumbed to ALS.

He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Barbara Grey, of Lee’s Summit; his mother, Mary Grey, and step-mother, Sharon Grey, both of Lee’s Summit; his son, Keith Grey, of Overland Park, Kansas; his daughter, Laura Misner, and her husband, Steven Misner, of Lee’s Summit; and his beloved grandsons, Kolten and Bryce Misner. He also leaves behind his brother, Kris Grey and his wife Patty, of Lee’s Summit; his sister, Cheri Gregory and her husband Roger, of Kansas City, Missouri; and numerous beloved brothers- and sisters-in-law, nieces, and nephews.

The family is deeply heartbroken by his passing but finds comfort knowing he is now free from his long struggle.

Services will be held on Thursday, October 23, 2025, at Langsford Funeral Home, 115 SW 3rd St, Lee’s Summit, MO. A visitation will begin at 2:30 p.m., followed by a Celebration of Life at 3:30 p.m. Guests are encouraged to wear colorful attire to honor Kevin’s vibrant spirit.

The family wishes to raise awareness that Kevin suffered from a rare, hereditary form of ALS. Due to the devastating nature of this 100% fatal disease, and in lieu of flowers, donations are requested to the ALS Association to help accelerate research for effective medicines and treatments.

We are so sorry for your loss. We always thought of him as family, and he always treated us as family in return. Every time we got together he always made a point of talking to us and “catching up.” His smile was always so big and bright and I will miss seeing it in the future. Joseph lit a candle for him at mass on Sunday and we will always think of him smiling down on us in our prayers in the future.

Sincerely,
Lucas and Crissy Volkman

Our thoughts and prayers are with all the family. Kevin was a good friend, and he will be missed by all.
