Obituary

Larry Wayne Schouten, 81, passed away at his home on January 12, 2025. Larry was born in Sedalia, MO on November 25, 1943, to Marvin and Gladys (Blakely) Schouten. He graduated from Lamonte High School in Lamonte, MO in 1961 and married Diana (Breon) Schouten on March 6, 1964. Larry became a weight inspector with the Missouri State Highway Patrol in 1965 until he was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1965. He served honorably as a radio-teletype operator in Germany until 1967, at which time he and Diana moved to Lee’s Summit, MO, and Larry returned to the Highway Patrol. He graduated with an associate’s degree in criminal justice from Longview Community College and later transferred to Motor Vehicle Inspections with the Highway Patrol. Larry was baptized at the Lee’s Summit United Methodist Church, where he and Diana were active members, in 1967. Larry and Diana welcomed their son, Jeff, into their family in 1973; and their second son, Jeremy, in 1974. Larry served the last 20 years of his career as Chief Motor Vehicle Inspector for the Missouri State Highway Patrol, before retiring in 2002. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle, bowling, socializing with his coffee group, and especially spending time with family. Larry was always the first person to volunteer to help someone move or mow their lawn or shovel their driveway if they needed help. He also volunteered for years with Meals on Wheels in Lee’s Summit and enjoyed humbly serving others. Larry is survived by his wife, Diana Schouten; his sons, Jeff Schouten and Jeremy Schouten; his grandson, Jonathan Schouten; granddaughters Audrey Mayes and Chloe Mayes; brothers Eddie Schouten (Virginia) and Phillip Schouten (Elana); sisters Linda Breshears (Bill) and Carolyn Hinten (Allan), and brothers-in-law Kennie Breon (Pat) and Dennis Breon (Dixie), his many nieces and nephews, and a host of other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his brother Bill Schouten. Visitation is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. at The Summit Church in Lee’s Summit, MO, with funeral services immediately following at 11:00 a.m. A private inurnment service will be held with close family at a later date. The family is requesting, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Lee’s Summit Meals on Wheels Lee’s Summit P.O. Box 1393, Lee’s Summit, MO 64063 in memory of Larry Schouten.

Phillip and family, we are so sorry for your loss. We are praying for you during this difficult time.

We are so sorry for your loss. Gary remembers many a good time with Larry at school. Praying for you and your family. We know Larry will be missed by many friends and family. God bless.

Diana, Jeremy, Jeff and families: Our hearts are broken. We are so very sorry for your loss! He was a wonderful husband, father grandpa and friend. He loved his family so much! Our families have memories of Larry that go back to when we were children visiting with three of our favorite cousins; Diana, Kennie and Dennis at the farm. Many times Larry was present. We are so thankful for all the conversations and laughter at reunions through the years. He will be missed! We wish we could be there. Remember, you are not alone, our thoughts and prayers are with you! Love, Mary Sue and Charlie Cox

I am so sorry the James family is unable to attend. My life is richer with so many warm memories of our Webster cousins through the years! It is comforting knowing that God is always able to support in ways beyond understanding. Please know how much I love the Schouten family and I am here to support you.

Diana, I am sad to hear that Larry has passed. I have fond memories when I would see him at Sprouts on his walks and always enjoyed working with you and Larry during tax time. Loving thought sent. Pam Dyer.

So sorry to hear of your loss. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.

Diana and family.
I am so very sorry for your loss. Prayers for you and your family

My name is Duane Cordell. I was married to Leslie Schouten(Cordell). She passed away in 2014.
I wanted to extend my very deepest sympathy to your family during this very difficult time.

To Bill and Linda and children

Our very deepest sympathy at the loss of your beloved brother Larry. Our prayers and thoughts are with all of you as you go through this difficult time of your brother and sweet uncle.

If you knew Larry Schouten well, you knew you had a friend! Larry and Diana have been church friends to me and my late husband, Lee, for over forty years. Larry delivered Tuesday Meals on Wheels for more years than I can recall. He did many special deeds for the people he served. He always offered a friendly greeting and lended a helping hand when needed. Other deliverers always looked forward to seeing Larry each week. He came with a smile and a willingness to serve others. Yes, if you knew Larry Schouten, you knew you had a friend!
My deepest sympathy to Diana and family.
Love, Bev Soxman
