Michael John Abeln

Obituary

Michael John Abeln, 66, of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, passed away Thursday, September 18, 2025.

He was born in St. Louis, Missouri, to Donald and Darlene Abeln. From an early age, Michael knew he wanted to be a pilot, and he pursued that dream with determination. He rose through the ranks to become a Captain and flew the DC-9 aircraft, a career he was deeply proud of.

He is survived by his wife, Patti Abeln, who lovingly remembers him as a wonderful husband and her soulmate, and by his children, Brad, Dana, and Shawn. Though he never had the chance to meet his granddaughter, Athena, she was a source of happiness from afar. He is also survived by his cat, Smokey, who was truly his companion and often treated like his baby.

Kindhearted yet steady, Michael was a man who valued hardwork and loyalty. Inspired by dedication, he believed that when something was worth doing, it was worth mastering. So many memories of him are tied to the things he loved; Sailing on Tablerock lake, taking his motorcycle out on the road, building models, or playing board and video games with a mischievous competitiveness.

Michael also found an interest in history and scifi, often ending his evenings with scifi show or documentary. Years of dedication shaped the way he lived and the way he encouraged others to do their best. Above all, he wanted people to work hard and explore everything the world had to offer. Showing by example, he achieved a great many things in life and died with few regrets. Sadly, his presence will be missed by all who knew him.

Visitation will be held on Monday, September 29, 2025 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. with service to follow at 11:00 a.m. at Langsford Funeral Home in Lee’s Summit, Missouri.

Michael will be missed. I enjoyed getting to know him and hearing his pilot stories as well as Smokey stories when he came to exercise. In time may his memory be a blessing.
