Obituary

Olive Gertrude Leighter, known to her loved ones as Gertrude, passed away on March 29, 2024, at the age of 99. She was born on August 17, 1924, in Oak Grove, MO. She was one of four children. The siblings all of whom preceded her in death. Gertrude married Gene Leighter and they had three sons, Charles, James and Steven. Gene and her son Charles preceded her in death. In the last two years, Gertrude had been residing at Addington Place of Lee’s Summit, but still enjoyed getting out until the last few months of her life.

Gertrude had a vibrant personality and enjoyed various hobbies throughout her life. She delighted in shopping and cherished moments spent fishing and “gambling at the boat.” Gertrude had a particular fondness for eating out and relished any opportunity to savor a meal that she did not have to cook. She also loved her Nutter Butter cookies and licorice.

In addition to her hobbies, Gertrude dedicated herself to her family and held various roles in her lifetime. She was a loving wife and mother, and at times, she worked outside the house at Kansas City Screw Products, the family business. Gertrude took immense pride in her three sons and their families.

Gertrude’s most cherished memories include her time spent traveling the world. She especially liked her trip to Jerusalem, which held deep meaning for her, she used to wear a hand necklace from that trip around her neck. She often spoke about the experience with great fondness. At Night, she enjoyed watching reruns of “The Andy Griffith” show before bed.

Gertrude will be remembered for her compassion, empathy, and unwavering loyalty to her family and friends. She possessed a unique ability to show kindness and charity to those in need, and her generosity knew no bounds, often handing out cash to family and friends in need.

Olive Gertrude Leighter is survived by two of her sons, numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, step-granddaughters, and great-great-grandchildren. She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to know her. Gertrude’s legacy of love and devotion to family will live on in the hearts of those she leaves behind.
