Obituary

Patty Gayle Johnston, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and esteemed math tutor, passed away on July 12th, 2024, at Lee’s Summit Medical Hospital due to a sudden heart event at the age of 67. She was surrounded by her loving family during her final moments.

Patty is survived by her devoted husband of 43 years, Douglas Johnston, and their children: Doug & wife Kelly Johnston, Jana Johnston, and Ben Johnston. She is also survived by her two brothers Otis Turner & wife Pat and Ray Dean Turner & wife Sherry and their families. Patty was preceded in death by her parents, Ray Francis Turner and Janie Odessa Turner-Brust.

Patty dedicated over 40 years of her life to teaching and tutoring mathematics, touching so many young lives with her passion and patient ability to help her students not only pass but ace math! As a math fanatic, she was an avid lover of the number game Sudoku which she loved to play every day.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Patty will be remembered as an exceedingly loving and hospitable mother and grandmother. Family meant everything to her, and she poured her heart into creating a warm and nurturing home.

While we mourn her loss deeply, we take solace in knowing that Patty is now at peace and in the presence of her Savior, Jesus Christ, whom she loved. Her legacy of kindness, generosity, and dedication will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.

Patty was a wonderful mom and now grandma and special friend. Our families spend a lot of time together while the kids were in grade school. Patty’s influence in school was felt by many. I’ll never forget the popcorn hands she made for the Halloween parties at school epic! Her kindness and love were on show for all who knew her. Rest with Jesus dear friend! See you later!

My heart is sadden to hear about Mrs. Patty. She was so special to my son and I.I like the fact that she stayed on top of him when he needed that extra push in doing his math. Mrs. Patty will be greatly missed. My condolences and prayers go out to Jana and the family.

Doug and family,

My heart skipped a beat today when I received the call about the passing of Patty last Friday. I recalled all the good times our families spent together playing games, going on weekend trips and spend time while visiting Patty’s parents in Independence KS. Lost is painful! My prayers and thoughts are with you and the family.

May Patty rest in peace.

My sincere condolences to the family. My prayers will be with you all.

Patty was such a sweet, caring person. She loved her students and wanted them to succeed. She lived her Christian values by how she treated all those she came into contact. Our deepest sympathy to her family.

We were so very sorry to hear of Patty’s passing. She was such a welcoming, kind and generous host when my mum Marjorie and I visited in 1997, and then it was lovely to all meet up again in the UK in 2010. We will remember Patty as a wonderful loving cousin who found immense pride and joy in her family.

Mrs. Johnston was a friend of our family from Southwood Church of the Nazarene. Patty was also my math tutor many years later. She was so patient, loving, and kind. My heart goes out to Mr. Johnston, Doug, Jana, Ben, and the rest of the family. We are praying for you!

Doug, we are so sorry to hear about Patty. You have our heartfelt condolences.

So sorry for your loss and to miss the services. Great baseball memories with the Johnston’s and Patty was a great math tutor for me! Sad to see her go 😞.

Patty was a kind, patient, loving person who loved being a wife and mother more than anything. We shared many years of Bible Babes Bible study together and will always remember the fellowship we shared studying the Lords word and praying for each other’s families. Patty may be gone but will never forgotten!!! Our prayers are with each of you and we are sorry for your loss!!! With love and sympathy!! Mike and Vicki Coy

Doug, Doug, Jana and Ben,

To know Patty was to know a blessing. We hold special memories of Patty as a committed Christian who evidenced that commitment in many ways— including a devotion to her family.

Be assured of our thoughts and prayers at this time of loss. May your love and beautiful memories sustain you as you move forward in faith.

I am so sorry to hear this. I knew her at least 40 years when she substituted in the district, but she was definitely a math teaching whiz! She is the only person to whom I would refer a high school or college student who was struggling in math. In fact, she even tutored one of my daughters. Just recently she called me about an elementary student who needed math tutoring. We had such a nice conversation about our love of teaching. Patty mentioned her love and devotion to her family! You have my deepest sympathy for your loss.

Mrs. Patty was my math tutor for several years- she helped me ace many a test and gave me confidence in my math abilities. She also tutored my little brother, and we always enjoyed going to their house because Doug and Patty were always so patient, kind, and welcoming toward us. I remember when she came to our graduation party and told us that she kept the plant we had given her several years ago; this touched me. She was always so wholesome. Not to mention she was the best at making treats- we looked forward to getting her annual bag of delicious Christmas goodies every year! Genuinely nothing but lovely, fond memories of a loving woman with a kind soul.

With that being said, she will truly be missed. My deepest sympathies are with Doug and the rest of her family that she always spoke so lovingly about.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the Johnston family. Patty is one of the most caring and compassionate people I have ever met. I was lucky enough to have met her and I cherish all the memories I have.
