Obituary

On Tuesday September 27, 2022 Phyllis Ruthe Hunter, loving mother, grandmother, sister and aunt passed away at the age of 96.

She was born on June 22, 1926 in Kansas City, Missouri to Roy and Barbara Vannice. Phyllis graduated from Southeast High School in KC, MO. in 1943.

On June 26, 1946 Phyllis married Dale Edward Hunter. They remained happily married until his death in 2000. They had two daughters, Nancy and Judy.

She enjoyed working at secretarial positions at Jaccard Jewelry in downtown KC for 18 yrs., and with her husband at their family-owned businesses; Missouri Typewriter Co in KC, and Suburban Office Equip Co in Lees Summit. She retired in 1992.

Phyllis was an active volunteer in her community since 1961 until her death. She was a member of the Business Women of Missouri; Mayflower Society; NSDAR Adam Yager Chapter; Eastern Star Ivy Leaf Chapter; Shriners Ararat Ladies w/o Nobles; and volunteered at the Ararat Shrine Needle Guild for children.

She loved reading and then sharing her books, playing cards, dancing, music, KC Royals & Chiefs games, and driving her car. Phyllis especially enjoyed sending cards to friends and family for all occasions. She travelled within the US and the Caribbean, with Alaska and Grand Canyon, with her daughters, being the highlights.

She valued spending time with family, especially decorating and celebrating Holidays and birthdays at her home.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her father, Roy and her mother, Barbara Vannice, her brother Chuck, her husband Dale, as well as her grandson Jeremy, granddaughter Melisa and Great granddaughter Mellie.

She is survived by her daughters, Nancy and Judy, grandson Shane, his wife Erin, and great grandsons Colin and Miles Dark. Brother Jim, sister in-law Wilma, and three nieces Chris, Kathleen and Eileen, and nephews Bill and Don Vannice. She has many friends and family members not mentioned here. She is missed dearly by each of them.

Memorial contributions can be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children (lovetotherescue.org), American Cancer Society (cancer.org) or the American Heart Association.

I am sorry that I have not been able to make Phyllis service. I just found out and it’s too late to make arrangements. Please Judy and Nancy and the rest of the family know that your mother was a great influence on so many women in this community. She was my mentor and my big sister and so many ways. Thank you for sharing her with us. Rest in peace my pie eating friend love and hugs to you in heaven.
