Obituary

Shannon Craig Thompson, of Lone Jack, MO, a man of wit, wanderlust, and unwavering honesty. He passed away on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, at the age of 56. Surrounded by the warmth of family and friends at Saint Luke’s Hospital on the Plaza, Shannon’s journey came to a peaceful close. Born on November 2, 1968, in Ulysses, Kansas, to Harold and Lois (Randles) Thompson, Shannon was the 6th of 7 siblings, who embraced life with an adventurous spirit.

Growing up in Syracuse, Kansas, Shannon built the foundations of his character. After high school, he proudly served his country for five years in the United States Air Force. His time stationed in Germany ignited a lifelong passion for travel and learning, broadening his horizons and enriching his perspective.

Upon his honorable discharge, Shannon’s thirst for knowledge led him to pursue higher education. He earned an Associate of Science from Garden City Community College, a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Pittsburg State University, and a Master of Science in Biology from the University of Central Missouri.

Shannon’s career was as diverse as his interests, ranging from working in State Parks and the post office to laying fiber optic cable and ensuring quality control in labs, ultimately finding his calling with the Department of Homeland Security.

Outside of work, Shannon’s greatest joys were found in simple pleasures: cherished moments with family and friends, exploring new places, immersing himself in the outdoors, enjoying a good movie, and, of course, indulging in delicious food. Though he never married, his heart was full with the love of his expansive extended family. Shannon had a remarkable gift for connecting with people; it was rare for a conversation to end without a new friendship blossoming. Known for his candid nature, Shannon was always true to himself, speaking his mind with refreshing honesty.

Shannon was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Harold and Lois Thompson; his sister, Rhoebe Thompson; his brother, Nathan Thompson; his sisters-in-law, Peggy Thompson and Nancy Hannon; and his dear nephew, Tyler Brummett, niece, Kacey Carlson, and great-niece, Maxwell Loder.

He is survived by his devoted siblings: Gay (Clarissa) Thompson, Mort (Alton) Thompson, Twila and Bobby Diehl, and Amber and Troy Settles. Shannon’s memory will also be cherished by his numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great nieces, and great-great nephews, all of whom will carry his spirit forward.

A celebration of Shannon’s remarkable life will be held on Saturday, June 28, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Langsford Funeral Home in Lees Summit, Missouri. A graveside service at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Higginsville, Missouri, will be announced at a later date. Additionally, friends and family are invited to a second celebration of life in Syracuse, Kansas, on Wednesday, July 3, 2025, at 11:00 AM at the VFW.

My sincerest sympathy to all of you. Shannon was in several of the graduate classes I taught. He was always cheerful and we had a lot of laughs. He would also just pop into my office to visit when he visited campus. I will miss those visits. I was deeply saddened to hear of his passing.

May the happy memories lift you and surround you with love. Shannon and I enjoyed talking about flowers and plants and the amazing beauty of the world. He found joy in every day – a true gift. Blessings. Ray

I had the great opportunity to work with Shannon as a coworker and enthusiastic teammate. He was always a bright spot in any day and was influential in helping me get my bearings in the early stages of my work in Lee’s Summit! Often seen with a kind and genuine smile, Shannon lived with a gentle, thoughtful, humored, and gracious nature. He carried a sunbeam in front of him, and it showed.

My deepest condolences to the family, at this time as Shannon has graduated from life and is now received his diploma to enter heaven. Fly high Shannon!! You’ll be missed my friend.

Shannon was a funny guy and had a great sense of humor. He will most certainly be missed. I am very sorry to learn about his passing. Please accept my sincere condolences.

Shannon is a great person to have met during his lifetime. He will be missed. it was a pleasure to have worked with him.

Shannon was a great neighbor who love to get together to eat meals and talk. He is a true kind soul that has blessed everyone he met. Prayers for the family and friends he left behind.

I had the privilege in being Shannon’s neighbor and friend, and he was one of the first neighbors we got to meet when moving in. He had many good qualities, but the ones that stand out are his unwavering faith, and joy. He would always tell me that God has it. Nothing is outside of His control. He will be greatly missed.

Shannon was such a joy to be around. His kindness was genuine and his zest for life was one to be admired. I feel lucky to have known him. Wishing you peace and comfort during this difficult time.

My condolences to Shannon’s friends and family. I was a coworker of Shannon’s, he was one of the first people I met in 2015 when I started at the Lee’s Summit office, completely new to the area and Missouri. We sat kitty-corner to each other, and he showed me the ropes. We often talked about our interests in history, nature, and weather. He also talked very warmly about his siblings and nieces and nephews. He always had stories about them or was excited about getting together with them. He was always funny, warm, positive, curious, and honest. After we split off to different offices, we continued to cross paths over the years, and I was always happy to see him. He will be missed!

I guess it took a while for the news to make it to the West Coast, but I just found out my friend had passed. I am happy that the last messages we shared were my daughter’s ventriloquism performance so he could have a chuckle.

Shannon never ceased to be a positive force. The world is a little dimmer without him. I know he wouldn’t want me to be sad because he never wanted anyone to be sad. Thank you for everything, Shannon!
