Obituary

Susanna Maria May, 44, of Lees Summit, passed away on the evening of August 16th 2021, at St. Lukes on the Plaza. She was born January 22nd, 1977 in Kansas City, MO.

Susanna graduated from O’Hara High School as a member of the Class of 1995. On June 16, 2001 she was united in marriage to Brooks May of Peculiar, Missouri. They began their union residing in Greenwood, Missouri and later moving into Lees Summit, Missouri. Susanna was a beam of light and energy for all of those lucky enough to have known her. Susanna had a warm smile and sparkling eyes that comforted those around her. She was the favorite: Parent, Sister,  Sister-in-Law, Aunt, Friend, Co-worker and any other group that she was a part of. In early December of 2020, Susanna was diagnosed with Stage 4 Renal Cell Carcinoma. Susanna was strong both mentally and physically and took to fighting this aggressive disease on day one of diagnosis and continued every day after. With incredible strength she hid the pain from those around her and  masked it with a smile and her quick wits. Susanna had an army of support from the Parish and beyond that brought peace to her and hope and faith to many people near and far. Susanna was a loving wife, a model mother, an exceptional sister, and a faithful friend.

Susanna was preceded in death by her parents, Lawrence and Ana Maria Wernsman, and her infant sister, Elizabeth.

She is survived by her husband Brooks May and their four children Preston (17), Landon (14), Braydon (13), and Brooklyn (10). She is also survived by her seven siblings, Patricia (Steve) Spilker, Robert (Luci) Wernsman, Jackie (Pat) Murphy, Yvonne (David) Miguel, Edward (Julie) Wernsman, Karen (Kris) Poletis, Mark (Jenn) Wernsman; and 18 nephews and nieces.

What a beautiful tribute to Susanna. We loved having Susanna and Brooks and their energetic crew as our neighbors for many years. We are so very saddened with Susanna’s passing but truly rejoice in her strong faith and for having had her generous and warm presence in our lives.
Our love and care goes out to Brooks and their children. They will be in our prayers.

So very sorry to hear of your loss. Praying for God to wrap his arms around your family and give you piece, Amen

What can one say to comfort you Brook and children. She is in heaven and will always watch over you all. Celebrate her life and remember how great a wife, mother and friend she is. My prayers are with you. I learned that all the way to the end she was still thinking of others. My son has has been battling an illness. Susanna called to check on him hours before going to Heaven. That was what kind of person she was.

Susanna always made me smile. She was a bright light that will always be remembered. She is healed now. I am sorry for those left behind. That is the hardest part. I worked with her a short time and already miss her.

My heart is sad – Susanna’s life was taken so very young. I know the faith of all her family will be giving a new and different love to each other. Susanna’s mom and dad are holding here close and also in view of our Lord. My prayers are for all of you and Susanna. I love all the Wernsmans. Carol Henke

May Family, wishing you all comfort and strength during this difficult time. As a person who grew up on Booth street right behind O’Hara and St. Regis my faith and the wonderful people that lived out their faith, like the Wernsman family and many other wonderful families gives me reassurance that Suzanne is with our Heavenly Father. God Bless

We are so sorry to hear of Susanna’s passing. All of the Wernsman family have our prayers in this time of your need. We all started as young families on White and continued on to St Regis. God bless all of you

Although I did not know Susanna, it is evident that she was a wonderful wife and mother…We are so sorry for you, Brooks, and your precious family♥️May God hold you close♥️

Brooks and family, I was very saddened to learn of Susanas passing. I know you have a wonderful family to give you all the love and support they can. And I know you have a wonderful church “family” that will be there for you whenever they can. I know it’s hard to lose your beloved spouse. Just stay strong and be there for your children. Thinking of you and praying for your peace. Judy McVey

My heart and prayers go out to your whole family. Susanna was one of my first friends in 1st grade at St.Regis and I have clear memories even that young of her being so funny. We were teammates for many years and played basketball at O’Hara. She was tough and crazy fast. Most of all, she was always kind and very humble. It’s all so sad and isn’t fair. May the angels lead her into paradise and may all who loved her be comforted with peace.

My heart and hugs go out to your family. While I only met Susanna virtually, I could tell she was lovely. And, I see that same loveliness in her daughter who was a joy to coach.

We are terribly saddened to hear of Susanna’s passing. The loss to your family is heart breaking and we will continue to pray for love and suppprt.

Brooks, Preston, Landon, Braydon, Brooklyn, and all of Susanna’s siblings, we are very sorry for the loss of Susanna’s precious life, she was an incredible human being, her smile brightened up a room and her welcoming arms made everyone feel her love. Praying that God give you the strength to continue moving forward during this difficult time. With all of our love accept our sincere condolences.

I will never forget Susanna and Shannon growing up together as best friends at St. Regis. She was a delight! So kind, friendly and giving. May God hold all of you in the palms of His hands as you travel through this difficult time. She will be missed!

Brooks our hearts a broken we love you and your family . Sending prayers hugs and love. Bill and Weezie

I first met Susanna at OLP where Preston and my daughter Jacqueline attended school together. She always had a such a big smile and was so kind. She was the first person to catch me up when I came running in late for a class party. Susanna was always so pretty and pulled together – even when she was chasing her kids. When I found out she was part of the Wernsman family, it made complete sense why she was so nice. She was a fighter who loved her family dearly. I know she is in heaven and will be watching over them. To the May and Wernsman family, I am so sorry for your loss. Susanna was truly a wonderful person. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

So very sorry for your loss! I had a transaction with Susanna a few months ago and she was a delight to work with. Always, upbeat and kind. Knowledgeable and efficient as well. She will truley be missed by those of us in Real Estate. Our hearts go out to you, her family. Bless You!
