Obituary

Valerie Rosenthall, a beacon of inspiration and resilience passed away on May 16, 2024, at the age of 91.  Born on August 27, 1932, in Kansas City, Kansas.  Valerie’s life was a testament to the power of determination and love.

Daughter to Bernice and John Gabriel Tate.  Valerie grew up alongside her siblings L.C., Willie, John, Leroy, and Dorothy Mae.  She pursued her education at Sumner High School and Kansas City Kansas Community College, laying the foundation for her incredible journey.

With an entrepreneurial spirit, Valerie made her mark in the business world, operating grocery stores in three locations and later establishing a successful commercial janitorial company.  Her tenacity and innovation were truly inspirational.

Valerie was united in matrimony to Aron Rosenthall.  Her heart was full of love for her children, Bernice, Diane, and Vanessa. Michelle and Julius Brown, the love they showed her made them her children as well she was their Mother Dear. She was a devoted mother who made time for her children, whether it was taking them to dance and music lessons or being involved with PTA at their school.  She was quite active and loved to play basketball and shoot pool. Occasionally, she could be found dancing along to the beat of a song.  Going to church was very important to her.  When her children were growing up, she was a member of the Mt Zion Baptist Church where she sang in the choir.  She later converted to Catholicism and brought with her love of gospel music to the Our Lady and St Rose Catholic Church.  While there Valerie along with her sister started a youth gospel choir.  At the time of her passing she was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church. Valerie’s legacy will continue with her children Bernice Morris, Diane Barber, and Vanessa Rosenthall along with grandchildren, Gretchen Simpkins(Ramon), Aneka Rojas(Anthony), Michael Kidd(Kelly), Gabriel Rosenthall, and Matthew Barber and her great-grandchildren Deja, Taylor, Efrain, Victoria, Tamia, and Jeremiah.

Valerie will be missed by a host of relatives in Texas, Illinois, and Michigan although they live afar they would call to talk to her on a regular basis.

Valerie’s legacy is one of love and compassion.  She touched the lives of countless people during her lifetime, and her impact will continue to be felt for years to come.  Valerie’s family and friends take comfort in knowing that her memory will live on through the countless lives she touched and the example of kindness she set for us all.

A celebration of life for Valerie will be held May 24, 2024, at 9:00 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 1800 MO 150, Lees Summit, Mo.  Valerie’s love and warmth will forever be cherished by those who knew her.

Vanessa and family,
Mrs. Rosenthall was such a lovely person. I will always remember her being quiet and patient while we, as teens and preteens, tried to learn the beautiful music her and Mrs. Walker were trying to teach us. It was always nice to see her in church, long after the choir disbanded. Hugs and love to you all while you grieve.
