Obituary

Loving wife, mother and grandmother, Wilberta Coulter, age 88 of Independence, died Monday, March 19, 2018 at Northcare Hospice House. Wilberta was born March 26, 1929 in Deepwater, Missouri. She spied a somewhat rowdy man on the semi-pro ball field one day named Frank Coulter and spent 64 years taming him with adventure and love. In 1961 a fateful work assignment to Concepcion, Chile via Sheffield (Armco) Steel led to the adoption of twins, Mickey and Lori. Wilberta worked at The Vendo Company and was later a legal secretary where she enjoyed a long and fulfilling career that included working as personal secretary to the former U.S. Rep William Randall. She was involved in the Santa Fe Trail Doll Club, Soldier’s Angels and was a devoted member to her church family. Most recently, she knitted loads of hats for underprivileged children. She loved to travel and to watch or listen to the Royals and eat ice cream. Wilberta is preceded in death by mother, Virginia Downing; father, Ben Downing; and twin brother, Billy. She is survived by Frank Coulter, Mickey Coulter and Lori Kodanaz (Ahmet); grandchildren, Andre and Tyler Kodanaz; brother, Don Downing; Great Aunt, Juanita Ferro; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Visitation – Saturday, March 24th 9:30 AM – 11AM Langsford Funeral Home, Lee’s Summit, 3 rd and Jefferson – followed by service. Private burial – Mt. Washington Cemetery. Suggested memorial contributions – Sugar Creek United Methodist Church, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society-Mid America Chapter or a charity of choice.
