Obituary

Jozette A. Riggs, age 46, passed away January 29, 2024, at her home. A Celebration of Life will be held Friday, February 2, 2024 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Elm Spring Baptist Church in Kingsville, MO.  In lieu of flowers the family asks that you donate to a local animal shelter or the Humane Society.

She was preceded in death by her paternal and maternal grandparents.

She is survived by loving  son Jonathan Daniel Hosfelt, co-partner in crime and love of her life Darin Peery, her loving parents that instilled their values of love and compassion in caring for others Norman and Alice Riggs, her sister Jessica Rucker (Kevin Rucker) and their children (Courtney and Jacob Umphreys, Clara, Jamie (great nephew Levi Mahan), John, and Kimmy Rucker), sister Jacqueline Lee (Tyler Lee) and their children (Ember, Hunter, and Wrangler Lee), Uncle Michael Riggs and Aunt Carolyn, adopted grandma Judy Holt.

Miss Jozette Alyce Riggs was the first-born daughter of Alice and Norman Riggs. Born October 22, 1977, in Pittsburg Kansas, she was instantly adored by her parents, grandparents, and Uncle Michael. Jozette grew up in Altamont, Kansas, graduating from LCHS in 1996. In high school Jozette made many lifelong friends with classmates and teachers alike. After high school, Jozette attended LCC and later graduated from Pitt state with her teaching degree. While obtaining her degree, she also became a mother. Though her teaching career was short live, she took her job of mothering Jonathan to a master level. Jonathan was the light of her life. She dotted on him lovingly and smotheringly at times. She was his biggest fan, his constant encouragement, watching out for him in regard to his health, and always making sure he was well taken care of. Jozette loved all her friends and family deeply. She was an all or nothing type of gal, and she would always let us know what she thought we should or should not do.

Jozette met the love of her life, Darin Peery, in 2004. She has assisted him in managing Peery’s Market in Lone Jack, Missouri, for the last 13 years. Darin and Jozette had many happy memories shared while working at the store and traveling to Mexico together. Jozette loved bringing her dogs Dario and Luna with her to the store and spoiling them at home. Jozette loved her family, friends, and pets. She was also a huge fan of our Kansas City Chiefs. She enjoyed gardening and cooking almost as much as she loved bossing us all around. Jozette was a great encourager and had a beautiful way with words. She will be missed more than any words can be expressed by the grieving family at this time. The unexpected tragic passing of Jozette has left them all at a loss.

My thoughts and prayers go to Josette’s family! Jozette was an awesome person and we had great times when our boys were young and played baseball together! I had moved away and reconnected with her on Facebook, but it was like we never missed a beat! God speed my sweet friend!!

My sweet Jozette:
Walking in to the front doors of LCHS and seeing you at the table was always a source of comfort. You were a special person and I have held a place for you in my heart for more than two decades. I wish you love on the next phase of your journey and know that your name is a blessing.

Godspeed,
Jaime Tucker
LCHS ’96

Josette is my first cousin one time removed. I never met Josette, but I could tell that she was a wonderful person by the interactions we had on Facebook. When I heard the news of her passing, I was shocked and saddened. This reminds me of my own mortality, but I know she is in Heaven with family, friends, former pets and Jesus and Heavenly Father. I look forward to meeting her in the next life. My love and prayers go out to her family, and all of those mourning her passing.

I’m truly sorry for the loss of this beautiful soul! She was an amazing woman. I was blessed to cross paths with her many years ago, as we had attended the same church. Jozette loved Jesus, and is now safely home in His loving arms. I know one day all of us who knew her and knows Jesus will be reunited in Heaven for eternity.
Continued prayers for her family and friends, as they start the healing process without there sweet Jozette🙏🏻

Jozette was always so easy to talk to. I will miss our girl talks. She will be forever missed. My heart goes out to her most dearly loved ones.

I’m so sorry for your loss! My daughter was in the same class as Josette. She was one of my students in grade school, just a very sweet person!
Praying for your family !

Our heart goes out to Jozettes family. She was a light in this world of darkness, a friend to many and I am fortunate to have known her. I hope for your comfort and peace as you Celebrate Jozette and find a positive in your grief.

She never rose her voice, rarely said a negative thing about anyone but the most stupid of customers.
Very nice and kind.
Heaven has gained an angel.

I only remember her as a child running around the farm at Grandma Creeds. She was truly the Love of everyone’s life. Got to watch her grow on Facebook, and the Love and affection she showed her parents and siblings. Thanks to her Loving Parents she became a beacon of light for all who came in and out thru her life. What a tragic loss this is for all who loved her. Our Prayers are with all her family, and especially her son. She will always be with him, and everyone else, because a light like that will never go dim…She walked with God on Earth, now she walks with him in Heaven. Thank You God for Sharing her with all who knew and loved her. Confort their shattered lives, and let them rest in your Peace.

My first impression/recollection of Jozette was of her intelligence and her kindness. That’s what shined through for me, first. As I got to know her a little better, I saw her work ethic and her love…. she wasn’t afraid of either. She CARED about everything and everyone. She gave her energy and thoughts freely to everyone.

This is a sad world we live in right now and it’s sadder still that the light of this wonderful, caring woman is no longer with us. My heartfelt condolences to Darin, Jonathan and the rest of her family that are missing her so much right now. God bless you Jozette for all that you contributed to everyone in your life that ever met you. You did it right.

I truly wish I had been able to make it to Josette’s celebration of life. I met her in choir in school She was such a rare soul. It was so easy to adore her. Even though we sort of lost touch throughout the years, she would still reach out to me she saw a negative post I made on Facebook. She was also one of the only people in the world that knew what to say when I was going through a mess with my divorce. She was taken too soon, and she will be missed.

We moved to the area in 2003 and became somewhat of a regular. Upon entering the store Jozette would greet me, very friendly person she would show me the latest products. She was a very gracious, lovely lady.
