Obituary

With hearts full of sadness but also love and peace in eternal life, the family of Kathryn Ann (Kathy) Hughey announce her passing on October 31, 2023. Kathy battled breast cancer for many years, and is now in heaven no longer suffering with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and all her loved ones that have passed before her. Kathy was an incredible wife, sister, mother, grandmother, and friend. She had a servant’s heart and was loving, loyal, and encouraging to everyone around her until the last day of her life.

Kathy grew up in the small town of Cameron, Missouri, near the “big” cities of St. Joseph and Kansas City, enjoying both rural and city activities, with many cousins and countless friends. Kathy and her only sibling, Jeanne Marie Rooney, were so lucky to have had parents providing unconditional love, stability, and a lot of fun. Her parents were Joseph Cletus and Marguerite Catherine (Schuele) Rooney, who also grew up in Cameron, he a rural postal carrier and grain farmer, and she an office manager for a car dealership. Kathy always strived to do her best academically and was valedictorian of her graduating high school class.

At the University of Central Missouri (Warrensburg), Kathy earned a Bachelor of Science in Communications and Public Relations and graduated Magna Cum Laude. She created lifelong friendships from the Delta Zeta Sorority. She met her husband, Rick Hughey, and they married in 1976. Since 1982, they have lived at Raintree Lake in Lee’s Summit, Missouri, where they enjoyed a strong sense of community and life near the water. Rick and Kathy just celebrated 47 years of marriage in the past few weeks.

After college, Kathy worked as the Public Relations Director for Children’s Mercy Hospital. She was responsible for creating the original iteration of the Children’s Mercy logo that still lives on today. She also led the team that organized the first Tom Watson Children’s Mercy Hospital Golf Classic in 1980. Kathy was an expert about volunteering, event planning, and public relations, and wove these sets of skills into her professional, volunteer and even personal lives. In addition to Children’s Mercy early in her career, she also worked as a manager with Longview Community College, UMKC’s Toy and Miniature Museum, Hope House, and Truman Medical Center Lakewood.

Kathy was also known for being a tireless volunteer with organizations such as Lee’s Summit Chamber of Commerce, Truman Heartland Community Foundation, Lee’s Summit Symphony, and Downtown Lee’s Summit Mainstreet Association. The Chamber recognized her as Volunteer of the Year in both 2009 and 2014, and in 2018, gave her the Lifetime Member Award. Lee’s Summit Oktoberfest and Truman Heartland’s Annual Gala were two of her favorite events.

For most of her life, Kathy was a full-time stay-at-home mother of three sons, Christopher, Matthew, and Eric. Kathy loved being a mother and was confident that her calling of raising three children far outweighed any dream job or career accolades she could have ever imagined. She adored her sons, and her sons adored her.

Kathy was a Christ-centered parent, leader, and cheerleader for all of her sons’ sports and extracurricular activities. Kathy always led the charge for the Greenwood and Lee’s Summit Schools, helping with many kinds of events supporting the administrators, teachers, and other parents. Several times she served as PTA President and on PTA Executive Boards.

Kathy remained close to her sons as they completed higher education, faced their own health issues, and found lovely women, Liza, Brittany and Cassie. Eric and Cassie now have two children, Hadley and Wade. Kathy was so excited about being “Mimi” – a grandmother! While she won’t be here to celebrate Hadley and Wade’s life events, we will celebrate Mimi every day and remind the grandchildren of what a strong and loving woman she was.

Kathy’s passion for serving others radiated into personal gatherings with family and friends. Every birthday, holiday or special occasion included intricate decorations, countless gifts, and feasts of homemade food. Kathy’s speciality was perfecting her mother’s delicious pies.

Kathy learned that she had breast cancer in 2017 and metastatic breast cancer in 2021. She found her way through the labyrinth of health care, even taking chemotherapy approved by the FDA as recent as 2022. Making action plans with her medical team, she fought incredibly hard every day to be with us, and didn’t hit roadblocks until early September this year.

There are millions of great stories to share about Kathy. She was charming, fiercely loyal, and at the core, hard-working and honest. Kathy liked the challenge of always moving and counting her daily steps, even during all her health challenges. She loved diving into long conversations with family and friends; shopping and giving gifts; and eating out at her favorite restaurants. We hope you knew her and got to experience what a wonderful person she was. We would enjoy sharing stories with you.

Kathy’s parents preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband Rick, son Christopher and his wife Liza, son Matthew and his fiance Brittany, son Eric and his wife Cassie, grandchildren Hadley and Wade, and sister Jeanne and her husband David Virtue, all in the Kansas City Metro. Kathy has a nationwide extended family, including seventeen Rooney first cousins and eight Schuele first cousins.

Kathy would encourage us to always focus on your Faith, Family, and Friends — to Live Well, Laugh Often and Love Much — and to remember that “God loves impossible Prayers.” We love you, Kathy!

My thoughts and prayers are with Rick and the rest of the family in this challenging but celebratory time. Kathy was truly a “Golden Heart” throughout her life.

I am sorry to hear of Kathy’s passing. She was a great asset to the Lee’s Summit community and will be missed dearly.

Her family is in my prayers.

Kathy was an absolute light in this world. She was warm, compassionate and caring. Kathy mentored me when I opened my business in downtown. She even brought a group of women over to promote it. She continued to mentor me as we served alongside each other on the Truman Heartland Community Foundation board. She always shared her heart for the community wherever she went. She was always prepared for every meeting and took her volunteer opportunities seriously. I am so lucky to have known her. Her life and impact in this world will never be forgotten.

To the dear family of Kathy: As I read the obituary, the words depicted Kathy as she was….a very gentle, kind, and loving person. I am ao glad that I was able to see her at our 50th Class Reunion in Cameron last year. Those few moments spent will be in my heart for a lifetime…. Praying that God will continue giving you the strength and endurance needed to care out that which was so dear to her heart. The “pie perfecting history” needs to be carried forward. Pies today, neither smell or taste the same. They ingredients contained a whole lot of Love.

I didn’t have the pleasure of ever meeting Ms. Kathy in person however I felt like I knew her from the conversations I had with her son Chris who is my current supervisor at The City of KCMO. From speaking with Chris I could tell he was a mama’s boy and that their relationship was unbreakable so with that I offer my condolences to Chris and the entire family for their great loss. Rest In Heaven Ms. Kathy.

God Bless you all!

My thoughts and prayers to Kathy’s family. Kathy was a classmate growing up in Cameron. I have many fond memories of spending time with her, not only in classes but also choir, student council, theatre performances to name just a few. It was always great talking with her and catching up at the many class reunions that we attended, She will be greatly missed.

My heart and prayers go out to Kathy’s family. I was blessed to know Kathy as a friend and Delta Zeta sorority sister. I will cherish the time I got to spend with her at our fall gathering. I will miss you Kathy.

I am so sorry to learn of Kathy’s passing. I knew her well while our kids were in school together. PTA and parties were always fun with Kathy around! I pray for her family and close friends who will be lost without her. She was a very special lady who will be missed horribly.

I’m so thankful to have had many years knowing and sharing and enjoying life with Kathy! She was a bright light, organized a lot of outings and ultimately pulled a group of us girls together as friends. We shared our faith, time and had fun! I’ll miss her.

During this difficult time, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the Hughey family. It seems Kathy was a beautiful person, both inside and out. May your family find comfort in the memories you shared.

Our heartfelt sympathy to you all. We are so lucky to have known Kathy and experience her vibrant personality, energy, and wonderful smile. She was so courageous in her fight to beat cancer, and so strong in her faith. May she now rest in peace and light perpetual shine on her in our Lord’s heavenly kingdom. Linda & Mike Gerding

Matt & Brit and the Hughey family,
May God wrap his comforting arms around you at this time. Covering you in prayer.

Kathy was a wonderful person and mom. We have known her since our boys were in pre school together.(both named Eric.) It seems we had more than that in common. We share birthdays Dec.1. Both Eric’s spoke at LS West graduation. My son now works on the radio in Cameron, Mo. where she grew up. Kathy and I worked together at Truman Lakewood. Our husbands coached the 2 Eric’s at baseball until high school. I knew Kathy was the perfect mom when she brought frozen grapes to the boys ballgame when it was so hot. That was genius. She will be missed.
With sympathy,

To the family and friends of Kathy: I am deeply saddened to learn of her passing. I had the honor and privilege of working with her on numerous committees through the LS Chamber of Commerce and LS Cares – Character Council. She was a wonderful person, always happy to see you, and donated her time selflessly and with a happy heart. May she rest in peace. She will be sorely missed,

Dear Hughes family, Kathy was the best! She was a do-er, a worker bee, who cared deeply about others. I first met her when you “boys” went to PLMS, and she volunteered as a PTA mom. What a joy it was to work with her and get to know her! I have admired her perseverance during the past several years and know that she fought hard to spend more time with you. You carry her legacy. You are in my prayers for peace. My apologies for not attending her service as I didn’t know about it until I saw the post today.May her love surround you all.💕

I am so sorry to hear of Kathy’s passing. I am so impressed to see all the ways she helped others through her volunteer work. What a sweet legacy. My heart goes out to Rick, their sons and families. Rest in the arms of the Savior.

I am so heartbroken to learn of Kathy’s passing. We were classmates at Cameron High School. I last saw and visited with her at our 30th class reunion. She was the same warm, loving Kathy that I remembered from high school. My heart filled condolences go out to her family. I will always remember for her beautiful smile and sweet personality.

Rick and family,
I just found out that Kathy had passed and is now healed and whole in heaven! Praise Jesus! It’s a double edged sword – you’re thankful they’re whole with no more illness or pain but we miss them terribly! We’re force to take a path, a new chapter whether we want to or not. It is a time of learning more about yourself and your relationship with God, our Father. We’re blessed with family and friends around us that are there to support us and that we in turn can support. Kathy was excellent in rallying people together! In the last several years she brought so many different groups of people together be it family, friends, DZ sisters! I’m so very thankful she did. Reconnecting with my DZ sisters has been very uplifting for me. Wished I would have been able to be at more of the get togethers. I am thankful for being at the ones I was. Also so grateful to meet Kathy and have brunch in Lee’s Summit with her in July of 2022. She was the epitome of a fighting spirit and not giving up! Such an inspiration! She is and will be missed by so very many who knew her. My prayers for you all are that you all will put your faith and trust in Jesus and allow His comforting arms to surround you and allow Him to walk through this time in grief with you. Don’t rush it and don’t allow anyone to rush you through this. Besides the Lord being with you all, I know you’re surrounded by all that love Kathy and your family. You all are loved and prayed for by many. Much love and prayers, JoAnn Frier Youmans.

“The Lord bless you, and keep you; The Lord make His face shine on you, And be gracious to you; The Lord lift up His countenance on you, And give you peace.’”
‭‭Numbers‬ ‭6‬:‭24‬-‭26‬ ‭NASB1995‬‬

Rick and sons, my thoughts go out to you and your family. Live each day to the fullest and be proud of each day you had with your wife/mother and the legacy you both created with your boys. Thank you for always being a good friend to me and I am always here if you need me. Take care Ricky.
