Obituary

Mary Patricia (Patty) Brummel passed away 7/29 at her home.

Patty was born in Kansas City, Mo to Harold (Dick) and Mary Catherine (Huerter) Brummel on August 11, 1959. She joined 5 brothers and immediately became the princess of the home.

Patty worked at the Sheltered Workshop of Joplin for 15 years and then 22 years at Southeast Enterprises in Raytown. Her work was very important to her, so much so that she hated to miss a day, even if it was for vacation.

Patty loved life, most of all her family. She enjoyed all family celebrations especially her birthday which always consisted of pizza and chocolate cake. She loved having her brothers around for the parties and then as they were married the sisters-in-law were especially welcomed. Then there were the nieces and nephews. The more the merrier for Patty!

Patty moved into Cabrini House in 2005 with 5 ladies. This started a new chapter for her and a new family. The girls worked together, partied together, traveled together, and enjoyed each other’s company. We will always be grateful to the staff that kept Patty safe, happy, loved and well cared for. All the staff is great, especially Becky and Robin who have been there since the beginning.

In her spare time, Patty participated in Special Olympics. She took part in bowling, basketball, and square dancing. She was very proud of every medal she received. She loved listening to her music (Elvis and Reba) while reading her soap opera magazines.

Patty is survived by her mother, Mary Brummel, brothers Mark (Carolyn), Dave (Denise), Mike (Diane), sisters in law Jane Brummel and Susan Forward. She also leaves 14 nieces and nephews and 19 grand nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her dad, brothers Dick and Phil and nephew Benjamin Brummel.

People may think that having Downs Syndrome is limiting, but Patty taught all those around her more about living and loving than we could have ever taught her.

She will be greatly missed by all who knew and cared for her and especially by her family.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to the F.I.R.E. Foundation (Foundation for Inclusive Religious Education) c/o Our Lady of Presentation, 130 NW Murray Lees Summit Mo 64081

I’m so saddened to learn of Patty’s death. I remember some play dates when we were both around 8 -9 years old; and she was so fun to be around. I remember her very fondly as I am sure anyone who ever spent even a few minutes with her does, as well.

I’m so sorry for your loss! Patty was such a sweet loving girl when I knew her growing up in St. Catherine’s. The Brummell Family is in my thoughts & prayers.
