Obituary

Victoria L. (Yates) Cox, age 73, of Kansas City, Missouri, passed away on Thursday, February 9, 2023 at Tiffany Springs Care Center in Kansas City, MO. She battled bravely for 6 months against an aggressive form of breast cancer, and in the end was surrounded by the ones she loved and held most precious to her.

Vicki was born on August 30, 1949 in Kansas City, MO to Emmett and Catherine Ficht Yates. She married Darrel Peterson on August 8, 1972 and had one son, Jerrad Peterson. She later married Lynn Cox on January 15, 1983 and just celebrated their 40th anniversary together.

Vicki graduated from Raytown South High School in 1967 and received a degree in journalism from The University of Kansas in 1971. In the early years of her career, she worked in journalism and public relations for various media outlets. Several of her articles were published in newspapers including the Billings Gazette. She was exceptionally gifted at expressing thoughts and feelings through the written word. Later, she found personal satisfaction and enjoyment in free-lance writing. Her love of people and the desire to express the lives and stories of those less fortunate, led to a missionary trip in the Philippines where she wrote articles to bring awareness of the daily personal struggles within that part of the world. That trip brought her much satisfaction and was something she was very proud of. The writing of thoughts, personal poems and her own life’s learnings was always something she continued to enjoy and share with family throughout her years.

Exploring other interests lead her to work for a few mortgage lending offices and eventually obtaining her real-estate broker’s license. Engaging and working with her clients to help them find their perfect home was what she loved most about her job. Her personal dedication and fun-loving demeanor made all her clients feel that they chose the right agent. She ended her career at Reece Nichols in Lee’s Summit and to this day, still has many life-long friends from that chapter in her life. She was also a proud and active member of the Lee’s Summit Rotary and loved being part of a Bunko group to socialize and share in friendship.

She is survived by her husband, Lynn; son and daughter-in-law, Jerrad and Amy Peterson; grandchildren, Lauryn and Hayden Peterson all of Parkville, MO; sisters, Barb (Jerry) Foley and Karen (Terry) Aitkens, all of Lee’s Summit, MO; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and first husband. Family, above all, meant more to her than anything else. Having a large, yet close group of relatives gave her the strength and encouragement to tackle many of her own life’s personal challenges. Spending time with them, brought the greatest joy of all and a smile to her face. Her boisterous, fun-loving and sometimes loud personality made her the life of any party.

She will always be remembered for the pure, loving emotion she wore on her sleeve which was always expressed to her son, grandchildren, all other family, and friends daily. That love is returned right back. She will never be forgotten for her wonderful soul, which we were blessed to have as part of our lives. May she now rest in eternal peace.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 15, 2023 from 9:30-11:00 am at Langsford Funeral Home in Lee’s Summit, MO. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am immediately following visitation with a Celebration of Life for all family and friends at her home directly after.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to be made to The Salvation Army or The American Cancer Society.
